This part of the Costa de Almería is set on the vast plains of salt flats and sand dunes at the foot of the Sierra de Gador where the once barren wilderness is now an intensive horticultural area. Despite the enormous sea of white plastic green houses, one of the virtues of the west coast of Almeria is being able to combine the comforts of the urban developments with the scenic beauty of natural areas that have been left untouched by man.

Aguadulce
Aguadulce is the oldest of the city’s local resorts with an attractive palm-lined promenade, a tourist complex complete with hotels, apartments, restaurants, as well as a yacht harbour and a coastline that is ideal for enjoying the sun and the sea.

Roquetas de Mar
The old town of Roquetas de Mar is a typical fishing village with a very pleasant beach. The beaches have undergone major tourism development with large hotels, apartment blocks and restaurants. All kinds of sports can be played here, including sailing, underwater diving, water-skiing, tennis and horse riding. Nearby are the Salinas (salt lagoons). A saline marsh fringed with tamarisk it attracts greater flamingoes, little egrets, avocets and in winter the white wagtail.

Almerimar
Almerimar has several kilometres of each with crystal-clear waters, a fine marina and three golf courses. Almerimar can also offer hotels, holiday homes and apartments. Further along the coast are the abandoned saltpans at Guardians Viejas, a beautiful natural area where many gulls and terns are to be found.

Enix
Enix is situated at 723 metres on the gentle lower slopes of the Sierra de Gador facing the coast. It is well known locally for the water it possesses and the Moors built a total of twenty drinking fountains in the town of which, some are still used today. Enix was previously known for its mines which are now abandoned and previously brought it its wealth. It is a rustic enclave of Moorish origin, which preserves its original features in its architecture of narrow graded streets with white flat-roofed houses and the surrounding land is rich with almond and fruit trees.

Félix
Félix lies in the eastern part of the Sierra de Gador on the southern slopes with an old fortress that overlooks the typically white Moorish dwellings. The pueblo has the luxury of its own spring that supplies the village with water and magnificent views of the Alpujarra area.

Vícar,
Vícar, the last Alpujarreño pueblo before the coast, lies on the southern slope of the Sierra de Gador and also has an area of high agricultural production in the form of invernaderos (greenhouses). It is divided into several populated areas; Vicar Viejo, la Puebla de Vicar, la Gangosa, Cabanillas and Llanos de Vicar. It is also known for its cattle production and stone quarrying.

Berja
Berja is a farming town, the capital of Alpujarra Baja. Situated at the foot of the Sierra de Gador in the west of the province. Its municipal area stretches from the Sierra de Gador to the coast, surrounded by vineyards and fruit orchards, although today invernadero (greenhouse) farming is more common, affecting the landscape and natural beauty of the area. Berja has a considerable Roman and Moorish past, and some magnificent but dilapidated buildings. There is a ruined Alcazaba in the suburb of Villavieja and in the eastern suburb of Alcaudique are the remains of a Moorish bath.
